About Martial Arts and Wushu

What is Martial Arts?
Martial arts is a combination of combat sport, self-defence and art practices. The world over, various styles—ranging from boxing and Muay Thai to mixed martial arts (also known as MMA), Brazilian jiu-jitsu and wrestling—share the common ground of agility, strength and confidence. Wushu, as practised at RexArts Wushu, offers a unique mixture of performance and full-contact combat. Like other martial arts, we emphasise that classical Chinese martial arts can be a lifelong pursuit that fosters self-improvement, stamina and respect.

Martial Arts History
Martial arts has roots in human survival and military training. Many martial arts, including Chinese styles like Wushu and kung fu, trace their origins thousands of years ago, with some practices dating back to the Bronze Age. From these early beginnings to modern combat sports, martial arts have developed into a global phenomenon, and in Singapore, schools increasingly turn to martial arts for CCAs, giving children a structured path to learn techniques, develop life skills and build confidence in a safe and engaging environment.

What is Wushu?
Wushu is a Chinese martial art renowned for its fusion of fluid movements, routines and competitive forms. Apart from performance and self-protection, it introduces discipline, coordination and focus. At RexArts Wushu, our classes condition children and adults for strength, agility and confidence while encouraging an appreciation for Chinese martial arts and the spirit of competition. Practitioners also learn respect for their opponent and for the art itself. Wushu is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or cultural background, and its East Asian origins have given rise to multiple variations that reflect regional and historical influence.

Wushu History
The history of Wushu can be dated back to martial arts traditions that originated in China, including kung fu and taijiquan (tai chi). While traditional Wushu developed over centuries as a method of self-defence, physical fitness and moral cultivation, modern Wushu is a competitive sport that highlights forms, weapons and routines. Wushu first reached Singapore through cultural exchange and local enthusiasts, and it is now a common option in school CCAs. Today, it attracts children and adults alike, combining artistic expression, competition and the fundamental element of self-protection.
